The team is guided by dedicated coaches Jamie Cooper and Hayden Sampson, who are committed to fostering the players' skills and teamwork.

The Boksburg Cardinals Baseball Club has made a historic move by introducing its first-ever all-girls baseball team, the U15B Cardinals Girls.

The groundbreaking initiative aims to promote female participation in a sport traditionally dominated by males.

The U15B Cardinals Girls comprises a talented roster of young athletes, including Kerrin Aldrich, Daniella Aldum, Shayla-Mae de Jager, Amber-Leigh de Kok, Kea Dimo, Naomi Dimo, Claire Joel, Hannah Joel, Shaylee Mac Dougall, Peyton Watkins, Morgan Aldrich and Tatum Strydom.

The team is guided by dedicated coaches Jamie Cooper and Hayden Sampson, who are committed to fostering the players’ skills and teamwork.

Janine Watkins of the Boksburg Cardinals expressed immense pride in the team’s accomplishments.

“Despite having several players who are new to baseball, they have shown remarkable resilience and competitiveness in the U15B league.

“The girls are not only competing against their own U15B Cardinals boys team but also facing various mixed teams in their division, showcasing their determination and talent on the field.”

Watkins said this initiative is a significant step forward for women’s sports in the region, as it encourages young girls to engage in baseball, promoting inclusivity and diversity within the sport.

The Boksburg Cardinals are excited to support these young athletes as they continue to grow and develop their skills in baseball.

Watkins believes that as the team embarks on this new journey, they are set to inspire future generations of female athletes, proving that with passion and dedication, anything is possible.

“With the Boksburg Cardinals hosting the South Africa vs Zimbabwe U18 and seniors friendly series, club president Gavin Watkins saw a unique opportunity to expand ladies’ baseball within the organisation.

“Recognising the growing interest and participation of girls in this age group, we club successfully formed the team.”

Watkins hopes this milestone will inspire more young women to join the sport, which has become a shared passion for many in the community.

By leveraging this international event as a platform, the Boksburg Cardinals aim to further promote inclusivity and growth in baseball for female athletes.

Assistant coach Hayden Sampson mentioned that he has been coaching the girls since the start of the season, with some players having been under his guidance for the past three years.

“I have seen the improvements in every single one of them from fielding, throwing, to hitting.

“They have all made me proud as a coach throughout our season. For them to be playing in a league dominated by boys, they put up a fight.”

Head coach Jamie Cooper said the future of baseball shines brightly with this group of young women, with achieving so much in such a short time frame.

“After four months of extensive training sessions and various hours of commitment and hard work, I can confidently say that they have a great future ahead of them in the sport of baseball.

“As a coach, I’m reminded daily of the responsibility we hold, not just to teach the game, but to guide these athletes, helping them grow both on and off the field.

“Baseball is more than just a game, it’s a community, a passion and a life-changing experience.”

Cooper said the young ladies are proof that passion and commitment know no bounds.

“Whether it’s their first time on the field or they’ve been playing for years, we welcome all who share in the love for this incredible sport.

“It’s a privilege to be part of their journey, and as their coach, I am inspired every day by their enthusiasm and drive.

“Together with my coaching staff, we are building a team not just for today, but for the future. The best game in the world is just getting started for these talented athletes.”
