Boksburg’s chess dynamos Daniel and Teolen prove focus is key
Boksburg High’s Daniel Frade and Teolen Chetty are rising chess stars, using strategy, focus, and patience to excel both on and off the board.

Boksburg High School’s two Grade 10 learners are making waves in the world of chess with their exceptional talent and strategic thinking.
Daniel Frade (16) and Teolen Chetty (15) have become some of the school’s top players, demonstrating that success in chess is built on a foundation of patience, focus and careful planning.
Both have participated in provincial competitions.
For Daniel, who began playing chess at the age of 10, the game offers more than just a challenge.
“Chess helps me stay calm. It teaches me to think critically and stay focused, even when the pressure is on,” he said.
His approach to chess goes beyond just playing for fun; it’s a way to develop mental clarity and a sense of control in any situation.
Over the years, Daniel has grown as both a player and an individual, using the lessons from chess to approach life with a calm and thoughtful attitude.
Teolen, who started his chess journey at just seven years old, shares a similar passion for the game but places a strong emphasis on strategy.
“Chess isn’t a game of luck. It’s about planning and thinking several moves ahead. Every move you make is part of a bigger strategy, and you need to anticipate what your opponent will do next,” he said.
Teolen’s ability to think ahead and stay focused on the long-term strategy has made him one of the top players in his age group.

Both Daniel and Teolen agree that chess has taught them important life skills that extend beyond the board.
“Chess has taught me calmness. In life, you can’t just freak out when things get tough. You have to stay composed and figure out your next move,” Daniel said.
His ability to stay calm under pressure, both in chess and in life, has been instrumental in his success.

For Teolen, the key to success in chess is patience.
“Patience is everything in this game. You have to think carefully, anticipate your opponent’s moves, and not rush. It’s all about taking your time and being deliberate with each decision,” he explained.
This patient approach has not only made Teolen a skilled chess player but has also shaped his approach to challenges in everyday life.

While their passion for chess is evident, both Daniel and Teolen have other interests that contribute to their well-rounded personalities.
Daniel, a talented cricketer, enjoys the contrast between the mental challenge of chess and the fast-paced nature of the sport.
“Cricket is different because it’s more about quick reflexes and teamwork. In chess, you’re thinking several steps ahead, but in cricket, you have to react at the moment with your teammates.”
Both sports, however, require focus and discipline, qualities that Daniel excels in.

Teolen, who is also passionate about motorsport, finds that it offers a completely different experience compared to chess.
“Motorsport is about speed and precision. In chess, you have time to think, but in motorsport, every second counts. It’s all about making decisions quickly and executing them perfectly.”
Despite the differences, both chess and motorsport require a high level of concentration, strategy and quick thinking, making Teolen’s ability to excel in both areas a testament to his diverse skill set.
