Hundreds of cyclists honour fallen rider Donovan Theart during memorial ride
"Stop Killing Cyclists." The message echoed loud and clear on April 26 as over 400 riders pedaled through Atlasville in memory of Donovan Theart.
More than 400 cyclists gathered at dawn on April 26 to honour the life of Donovan Theart, a passionate cyclist who died after being struck by a vehicle while riding along Mercury Road in Atlasville on April 20.
The memorial ride began at 06:00 from the Bicycle Line at Summerfields Shopping Centre on Finch Street, with cyclists riding in a powerful show of solidarity and remembrance.
The route passed through Reier Road to Azalia and Mercury roads, where participants laid roses at the site of the crash to honour Theart’s memory.

A leading voice behind the event was Madelelaine Lees, a close friend of Theart and a dedicated cyclist herself.
“When we heard what happened, we knew we had to do something more than just mourn, we had to ride for him, and for every other cyclist we’ve lost.
“This ride wasn’t just about Donovan. It’s about all the lives cut short by reckless driving. Cyclists, runners, and pedestrians deserve respect and safety on our roads.”

As part of the ride, some cyclists carried placards bearing messages such as “Stop Killing Cyclists” and “Share the Road,” highlighting a broader campaign for road safety and awareness.
“We’re planning to host an awareness ride every three to six months. It’s not just about tribute, it’s about making sure this never happens again,” Lees said.

She emphasised the need for improved road policing, better driver education and harsher consequences for negligent behaviour.
Ekurhuleni police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela confirmed that the suspect involved in the fatal incident showed signs of being under the influence.
“A blood sample has been sent to the lab, and the driver, in his twenties, has been charged with culpable homicide and drunken driving.”
