The Boksburg SANBS clinic supervisor, Josh Motsanye, appealed to the community to spare around 20 minutes of their time to save lives by supporting national Blood Donor Month in June.
The campaign that raises awareness on the importance of blood donation. He said donating blood is not just an act of kindness but also a deed of giving another person a chance to live.
“We need as much blood as possible, irrespective of your blood type. One unit we take from you is 450ml of blood, which is equivalent to saving three adults or six children,” he said at a blood drive held at Ashton International College on May 30.
Motsanye appealed to community members to make a difference. “It only takes you 20 to 25 minutes. It gives another person a chance to add years to their life. We appeal to the community to spare 20 to 25 minutes of their time once every two months to date. It goes a long way.
“It might seem like an inconvenience or we ask too many questions but all that is to safeguard you and the recipient,” Motsanye said.
Over 200 people donated their blood during the drive.
Erica Strydom: It’s important to know you might be helping someone in a critical life and death situation by just spending a few minutes donating blood.
Vougan van der Merwe (Kempton Park): I’m donating to help others. I hear we save three lives every time we donate. I will come back again.
Jessica Botha (Boksburg): It’s quite nerve-wrecking. I’m not a fan of needles, but it was okay. If I can save one life, that’s all that matters. One person donating can be the difference between life and death for another person.
Jayme Ewing (Kempton Park): If it was you or one of your loved ones in this situation, would you not want them to be able to use this service? It’s a good cause all around. Anybody who needs it should be able to access it freely.
