Ekon Kai karatekas dominate at Sonoda tournament

Consistent champions raise the bar in National Kyokushin Karate competitions

The Ekon Kai Karate dojo of Boksburg once again proved its dominance in the national Kyokushin karate scene, taking top positions at the Sonoda Tournament hosted by the International Karate Organisation Kyokushin (IKOK) Sonoda Group on June 14.

Held at the tranquil Nan Hua Temple in Bronkhorstspruit, the tournament brought together top karateka from provinces across South Africa.
Led by Shihan Moeti Holomo, the Ekon Kai team stood out from the start, sweeping through multiple divisions to walk away with an impressive number of trophies and medals.

According to Shihan Holomo, the team had undergone specialised preparation for this event, which paid off in full.
“There were a lot of strong competitors from all over the country. But our karateka were ready. We held special training sessions for this tournament, and that’s why we dominated every division we entered.”

This year alone, the dojo has celebrated major victories in tournaments held in Umlazi, Kwamhlanga, and now Bronkhorstspruit. Their fighters have consistently taken first and second place positions, earning a reputation for being among the best-trained karateka in the country.

“Our training is focused and disciplined. We work hard to prepare each student mentally and physically. The kind of training we offer is what separates us from the rest,” added Shihan Holomo.

Beyond physical preparation, Ekon Kai emphasises character building, discipline, and respect. Many of the students come from various communities and see karate not just as a sport but as a life-changing journey.

“Our goal isn’t just to win tournaments. It’s to raise champions in life. Karate teaches responsibility, respect, and confidence. These values are what we pass on,” Holomo said.

Looking ahead, Ekon Kai is gearing up for upcoming regional championships in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, aiming to continue its winning streak and further uplift the next generation of martial artists.

“We’re proud of our students. They are dedicated, and they know that success comes from hard work and focus. The future is bright,” said Shihan Holomo.
