Boksburg Child Welfare remains a beacon of hope for vulnerable children but public support is imperative

Boksburg Child Welfare urges the community to come together to help fund and furnish its Keep Me Safe House for at-risk children.

Boksburg Child Welfare (BCW) is doing vital work – but they can’t do it alone.

The organisation is calling on the public to step up and support the protection of vulnerable children.

According to BCW director Nompumelelo Gidela, they are one of the largest organisations in Gauteng’s Eastern Corridor, designated to provide child protection services.
It operates from three decentralised offices located in Boksburg, Reiger Park, and Vosloorus.

“Our core business is to protect children from harm, provide supportive services to families and promote a positive environment for children to thrive,” says Gidela, adding that BCW is a beacon of hope for children.

“Our social workers and other team members are working tirelessly under very limited resources to ensure that children are safe and well taken care of.

“Due to a shortage in tools of trade, including cars and laptops, they sometimes go to the extent of using their resources to ensure that services are delivered.”

One urgent project is the refurbishment of a house intended to serve as a temporary safe care facility (Keep Me Safe House), a sanctuary for children facing immediate threats of abuse, neglect, or harm.

The Boksburg Advertiser previously reported that the safe house had to be temporarily closed in August 2016 due to a lack of finances and resources.

“However, this space requires significant work before it can open its doors,” said the director.

Gidela is appealing to local businesses and residents to assist in any way they can.

“Financial support is always welcome, but there is also a need for building materials like floor tiles, as well as furniture, baby goods, toys, non-perishable food, and good-quality second-hand clothing. Donations of laptops or a vehicle would also go a long way in supporting the daily work of social workers.

“BCW is committed to making a lasting difference in the lives of children, but we cannot do it alone. Let’s work together to protect our children. Never leave them unsupervised or in the care of unsuitable adults. They are our future- and they deserve our best.”
