Our readers feel that commuters should have the right to choose how they travel.
‘Let us make our own choices. It’s about the right to choose.’ Readers comment.
With growing tensions between traditional taxis and modern e-hailing services, as recently seen at Moponya Mall in Soweto, we asked locals why they believe the freedom to choose your mode of transport matters.
Here is what they had to say:
Natasha Lienberg: Being able to choose between taxis and e-hailing is not just about convenience, it’s about safety. As a woman, I feel more secure with e-hailing because I can share my trip with family. If that choice is taken away, my safety is at risk.Nondumise Khanyile: This is about families and everyday life. I use taxis in the day, but when I travel with my children at night, I need the security of e-hailing. Freedom of choice allows parents to protect their kids and travel with peace of mind.Tyron Oosthuizen: Having the freedom to choose between taxis and e-hailing is important because each service plays a role. Sometimes people need affordability, other times safety and convenience matter more. The point is, commuters should decide what works best for them, not be forced into one option.Itumeleng Modiba: When commuters can choose, services improve. Competition pushes taxis and e-hailing operators to raise standards, improve safety and lower prices. This benefits the whole country, not just individual passengers.
