Tambo Hospital streamlines care through clinic referrals
The hospital is encouraging residents to follow the referral system to help reduce congestion and improve patient flow.
Tambo Memorial Hospital is calling on Boksburg residents to make use of the healthcare referral system to ensure quicker, more efficient and fair access to medical services.
According to the hospital’s communication officer, Zoliswa Nzeku, the approach helps manage patient flow and reduces unnecessary congestion at its facilities.
“The referral system requires patients to first visit their local clinic, where they will be assessed and referred to the hospital if specialised treatment is needed. This process ensures that patients receive the right care at the right time and place while easing the workload on hospital emergency and outpatient departments,” said Nzeku.
Vicentia Rambau, quality assurance officer at the hospital, said patients who arrive without a referral letter will be triaged and prioritised based on the urgency of their condition.
She emphasised that visiting local clinics first not only improves access to care but also supports a more organised and effective health system.
Hospital management highlighted that emergency cases will continue to be attended to directly at the accident and emergency department, but for non-emergency cases, starting at a local clinic remains essential.

Rambau added that the system plays a critical role in reducing long waiting times in the emergency department, allowing urgent cases to be treated faster.
