Black Friday risks you can’t see: CPF shares insider advice

Boksburg shoppers are reminded that safety isn’t just about crowds. The CPF reveals overlooked risks and shares tips to avoid falling victim to scams and theft.

Black Friday is often seen as a battle of bargains, but according Mmapheello Mokoena, chairperson of the Reiger Park CPF, the real risks lurk in places most shoppers don’t notice.

“Most people think the danger is obvious: pickpockets or crowded malls. But the bigger threats are often invisible – online scams, QR code fraud and even distraction tactics that don’t involve direct confrontation.”

Mokoena reveals some surprising trends:
Digital shopping traps: Fake Black Friday websites and social media ads can trick shoppers into entering card details. CPF advises always checking URLs, using secure payment platforms, and confirming deals with official store websites.

Distraction thefts: Some criminals work in teams, creating fake emergencies or bumping into shoppers to steal phones or wallets. Being alert to unusual behaviour can prevent losses.

Return fraud confusion: Some stores experience a spike in scams during return periods following Black Friday, including the use of fake receipts or swapped goods. CPF suggests keeping receipts digital and being aware of store policies.

Parking lot dangers: Not just traffic accidents, cars left unlocked, bags in plain sight, or leaving engines running briefly can be exploited. CPF reminds drivers to stay vigilant even outside the mall.

While many shoppers focus on snagging deals, the CPF emphasises that awareness is the ultimate bargain.
According to Mokoena, a shopper might think they’re safe because they’re inside the mall, but online scams, QR codes, and distraction tactics are happening everywhere. People often overlook that.”

This Black Friday, CPF is urging residents to think beyond traditional safety: verify digital deals, keep valuables out of sight, be cautious of unexpected “helpers,” and teach children to stay alert in crowds.
