Ride for Sight main race route adjusted to 125km

The organisers identified road damage to a key intersection closer to the N3 highway.

The route of the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight main race has been adjusted from 116km to 125km after the organisers identified road damage at a key intersection just before the N3 highway.

The race takes place at Boksburg City Stadium this Sunday (February 15).

“Following sustained heavy rainfall over recent weeks, a final safety inspection conducted last week identified approximately 150m of extensive road failure at a key intersection along the original route,” said race director Linsay Engelbrecht.

According to Engelbrecht, the damage extends beyond standard potholing and includes significant structural collapse of the roadway, rendering the section unsafe for mass-participation cycling.

“In the interest of rider safety, the organisers have implemented an alternative routing that increases the long route distance from 116km to 125km. While the adjustment adds 9km, it was designed to ensure a smooth, secure and fully managed course.”

“Safety remains our absolute priority. The Dis-Chem Ride for Sight brings together professional cyclists, recreational riders, cyclists with visual impairments, and participants with other disabilities. Under no circumstances would we expose our riders or volunteers to unnecessary risks.

“The Dis-Chem Ride for Sight is recognised for its exceptionally high safety standards. In addition to comprehensive traffic management and road closures where required, the organising team undertakes proactive route preparation, including the repair and filling of potholes along the course. Only sections that meet strict safety criteria are approved for use, and full road closures are implemented where necessary to protect all participants.

“The event is one of South Africa’s most inclusive sporting occasions, enabling thousands of cyclists of varying abilities to participate safely in a professionally managed environment. The route adjustment reflects the organisers’ ongoing commitment to accessibility, safety and excellence, even when faced with unforeseen challenges.”

Engelbrecht encouraged participants to familiarise themselves with the updated route information.

There is no change to the 62km race route.
