BAC’s Steyn, Ungerer and Zackey secure medals at champs
Steyn grabbed a double in he shot put and discus, while Ungerer claimed a silver in her category. Zackey grabbed a bronze in the U20 men's 400m.
Thrower Amorè Steyn and one-lap specialists Lana Ungerer and Buddy Zackey spearheaded the Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) charge with a string of standout performances at the CGA Track and Field Championships on March 13 and 14.
Steyn emerged as the club’s top performer, delivering a golden double in the U18 women’s shot put and discus, both with personal best throws, while Ungerer and Zackey added to the medal tally with silver and bronze in their respective 400m finals.

The 15-year-old Hoërskool Hugenote learner in Springs set the tone early, launching a PB of 14.44m to claim shot put gold ahead of Dominique Nel (13.99m) and Luanel Strydom (12.00m). She followed it up in emphatic fashion in the discus, improving on her previous best to send the implement out to 39.08m — surpassing the 39.01m she set at a league meet at Germiston Stadium on February 28.
Hoërskool Monument’s Kara van Eeden settled for silver with 37.95m, while Marni Vermaas of Nories took bronze with a 35.58m effort.

Ungerer produced a composed and measured run in the U20 women’s 400m final, clocking 55.41 to secure silver behind the impressive Davida Strong. Strong not only clinched the provincial title but also booked her place at the World Athletics Championships in the United States later this year, thanks to her winning time of 54.42. Vene Esterhuysen completed the podium in 56.28.

Ungerer’s performance carried added significance, as her time secured qualification for the upcoming ASA Age-Group Championships at Germiston Stadium from March 26 to 28.


Zackey, meanwhile, showed grit and determination in a high-quality U20 men’s 400m final. After finishing second in his heat in 48.93 — having already met the ASA national qualifying standard — the St Dunstan’s College learner lined up for the final with clear intent.
Running from lane two, Zackey attacked the race with purpose but trailed Dylan Scheepers (Irun AC) and Terrence Mtshali (Cornerstone AC) down the backstraight. With the leading pair holding firm into the home straight, Zackey dug deep in the closing metres to secure bronze in 48.72.


Scheepers powered to victory in 47.81, with Mtshali claiming silver in 48.43, as all three medallists dipped under the 49-second barrier in a thrilling contest.
In the senior men’s 400m, BAC’s Marcus Peterson finished sixth in 47.65 after a strong closing effort. Up front, two-time Olympian Lythe Pillay dominated the field, storming to a world-leading 44.32 — the second fastest time of his career.

Elsewhere, Kabelo Mkhuma and Divine Mavhungu bowed out in the semi-finals of the U20 men’s 100m, while Junior Lekalakala’s campaign ended in the heats of the U18 men’s 200m.
