Melville Koppies launches birdwatching guide
Despite the weather conditions, the outing proved rewarding.
A newly developed birdwatching guide, beautifully designed by Ashlyn Campbell, is now ready for visitors to explore at Melville Koppies.
The guide was officially launched on March 15, when a group of more than 15 enthusiastic participants braved a chilly, grey morning to test it out.
Despite the weather conditions, the outing proved rewarding.
Birders spotted a variety of species, including amethyst and white-bellied sunbirds, as well as a zitting cisticola, marking a “lifer” sighting for one participant.
One particularly lucky group enjoyed a close-up view of a cardinal woodpecker busily hammering at a lichen-covered branch in search of insects.
The new guide enhances the visitor experience by recommending specific trails based on the types of birds one hopes to see.
It also includes a checklist, allowing birdwatchers to keep track of their sightings.

For those who prefer other outdoor activities, Melville Koppies offers several self-guided options, including a 5km trail and a 3km heritage trail.
Guided tours are also available, departing at 08:00.
In addition to birdwatching, visitors can enjoy monthly activities such as storytelling sessions on the second Sunday of each month and a guided 8km hike on the last Sunday.
Entrance fees are R100 for adults, R50 for those U18, and free for children under five.
These fees contribute towards supporting the conservation team working to preserve the area.
Secure parking is available at Marks Park on Judith Road, and security is provided on the Koppies.
