The accused, who features in a viral video showing an emaciated dog in the background of a TikTok clip of a young girl dancing in the Dawn Park area, made his first appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on March 25.

The case was postponed to the following day to allow the accused to secure legal representation. He faces charges of animal cruelty after authorities chose to hold the dog’s owner accountable rather than the young influencer featured in the video.

The dog, affectionately named Bobby, has made an incredible recovery thanks to the efforts of the NSPCA (National Council of SPCAs) and the Boksburg SPCA Charity Shop. She is now healthy, loved, and safely rehomed after a long road to recovery.

Bobby, a two-year-old female crossbreed Boerboel, had been forced to eat plastic to survive and was found malnourished, suffering from fly strike, and covered in ticks and fleas. Today, she thrives in her new forever home, showing her affectionate nature by spreading joy and kisses to everyone she meets.

Following complaints from concerned citizens, the NSPCA traced the girl’s address and discovered Bobby in a severely neglected state. Rescued and placed in the care of the Boksburg SPCA, she received premium meals, medical treatment, and round-the-clock attention.

In the viral TikTok video, the social media influencer danced for likes, while Bobby suffered quietly in the background.

Hundreds of South Africans were moved by her plight, and thanks to swift action by the NSPCA Special Projects Unit (SPU), Bobby was rescued, and her owner and the influencer were identified.

“Who knows what could have happened to Bobby if our SPU hadn’t intervened,” the NSPCA wrote on its Facebook page. The organisation added that the influencer had mocked the NSPCA when she learned they were on her trail.

She now faces charges under the Animals Protection Act, while Bobby enjoys the love and care she always deserved.
