Grandson dies saving grandmother from burning home

Neighbours worked together to reconstruct the three-room shack, demonstrating solidarity and support for the affected family.

Tragedy struck in Villa Lisa on March 21, when 37-year-old Siyabonga Skhakhane lost his life while trying to save his grandmother from a burning shack.

Speaking on behalf of the family, community leader Kleinboy Mollo said that when the fire broke out, Siyabonga rushed to rescue his grandmother. As he tried to break open the structure to help her escape, flames suddenly engulfed him, leaving him with severe burns.

He was rushed to Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital, but sadly succumbed to his injuries the following day. Miraculously, his grandmother managed to escape unhurt.

The loss has shaken the community, but neighbours have already rallied around the elderly woman, helping her begin the difficult task of rebuilding her home after losing all her belongings in the fire.
