Toy Libraries promote inclusion and peace through play

Join the global celebration of World Play Day 2026.

Children across South Africa are being encouraged to celebrate the power of play as the Toy Library Association South Africa (TLASA) joins the global celebration of World Play Day 2026.

Observed annually on 28 May, World Play Day highlights the importance of play in children’s lives and this year focuses on the themes of freedom, inclusion and peace.

The campaign encourages communities, schools, families and organisations to work together to create safe and inclusive spaces where children can learn, connect and have fun through play.

According to TLASA chairperson Debbie Cockrell, play can bring people together and strengthen communities.

“Play is everyone’s responsibility. When we work together, every child is included, and no child is left behind,” she said.

World Play Day also coincides with International Toy Librarian Day, recognising the role toy libraries play in providing children with access to educational toys and play resources.

TLASA said its programmes and partnerships currently reach more than 20 000 children across South Africa’s nine provinces, helping children gain access to quality play experiences while also promoting environmental awareness through recycling and reusing toys.

Communities are encouraged to take part by hosting play activities, supporting local toy libraries and creating opportunities for children of different backgrounds and abilities to play together.

International Day of Play will also be observed on 11 June under the theme “Protect Play, Protect Childhood.
