Reasons why emerging artists should enter the Sasol New Signatures competition
The competition has built a strong legacy of discovering and supporting some of South Africa’s most recognised contemporary artists.
South Africa’s emerging visual artists are being encouraged to take advantage of an opportunity that could help launch their creative careers by entering the 2026 Sasol New Signatures Visual Arts Competition.
For more than 60 years, the competition has played a major role in discovering and developing artistic talent, becoming one of the country’s most respected platforms for emerging visual artists.
With submissions approaching, here are 10 reasons artists should consider entering:
• Be part of South Africa’s longest-running art competition
Established more than six decades ago by the Association of Arts Pretoria, Sasol New Signatures has built a strong legacy of discovering and supporting some of the country’s most recognised contemporary artists.
• Gain national exposure
Artists selected among the top 100 finalists will have their work exhibited at the Pretoria Art Museum, offering valuable visibility among curators, collectors, galleries, media and members of the public.
• Be included in a professional catalogue
Finalists’ works will be featured in a professionally produced printed and digital catalogue, creating an important portfolio addition and lasting record of participation.
• Open to new voices and untapped talent
The competition welcomes South African citizens and permanent residents aged 18 years and older, with no upper age limit. Artists who have not yet held a solo exhibition, excluding academic showcases such as graduate exhibitions, are eligible to enter.
• Significant prize money and a solo exhibition opportunity
The overall winner will receive R100 000 along with the opportunity to host a solo exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum the following year. The runner-up will receive R25 000, while five merit award winners will each receive R10 000.
• A truly national competition with accessible collection points
Artists from across South Africa can participate by submitting entries through eight collection points situated around the country, making participation more accessible regardless of location.
• Access valuable artist resources
Entrants can make use of online resources, guidelines and preparation tools designed to strengthen submissions. Winners also benefit from mentorship and guidance from industry professionals.
• Connect with the art industry
The competition provides opportunities for artists to connect with fellow creatives, judges, curators, academics and collectors, helping to build relationships within the industry.
• All mediums are welcome
The competition embraces a variety of artistic forms, including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, installations, video works and mixed media, encouraging innovation and creativity.
• It can launch your career
For many previous finalists and winners, Sasol New Signatures has become a stepping stone into the professional art world, leading to media exposure, future exhibitions and gallery opportunities.
Artists interested in entering the competition can submit their entries in person at one of eight collection points across South Africa on June 9 and 10, 10:00 and 16:00.
