Ongoing gun violence claims another life in Reiger Park

The latest incidents have once again highlighted concerns over escalating gun violence in Reiger Park and surrounding communities.

Reiger Park police are searching for a gunman who shot and wounded a 22-year-old man on June 7.

The incident occurred at about 20:30.
The victim, whose identity is known to the Boksburg Advertiser, was reportedly walking from a local shop when he was ambushed near the corner of John Collins and Stokroos streets.

According to information available at this stage, the victim noticed an unknown man standing on the opposite corner before this person opened fire.

The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his left hand, left leg and right hip before being transported to the hospital by ambulance for medical treatment.

Police have opened a case of attempted murder.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
Leeroy Baaitjies
This shooting comes within a week of the murder of Leeroy Baaitjies, who was shot dead at the council-owned residential flats in Reiger Park on June 1.

Officers responding to the scene found Baaitjies lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.
Investigators recovered 11 spent cartridges near the body.

The motive for the killing remains unknown and no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information that could assist investigators is urged to contact Reiger Park SAPS.

Violence continues to plague community
The latest incidents have once again highlighted concerns over escalating gun violence in Reiger Park and surrounding communities.

The area has experienced several fatal shootings in recent months, including a mass shooting in which six people were killed, and several others were injured.
Authorities believe some of the violence may be linked to drug-related activity, gang rivalries, territorial disputes and revenge attacks.

Despite interventions by national, provincial and local government, increased police deployments, specialised Anti-Gang Unit operations and efforts by community organisations, residents of the area continue to live under the shadow of violent crime.

Community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger interventions by police, other government departments and residents to address the root causes of violence and restore safety to the area.
