Festive season road safety: City urges motorists to obey rules of the road
The operation yielded good results.
The Mayor of Ekurhuleni Tania Campbell, in collaboration with the EMPD and Community Safety Department, held a festive season road safety operation on the R554 Road, on November 22, to encourage motorists to obey the rules of the road.
Campbell said they initiated the operation to warn motorists not to drive under the influence of alcohol, stick to the speed limit on the roads/streets and ensure their cars are roadworthy.
“The operation yielded many motorists who have warrants of arrest. This exercise is not only about road safety, but also plays a pivotal role in ensuring that those that are law offenders are arrested.
“We are winning the fight against crime in Ekurhuleni with our ‘safer city’ model, which is effective and productive in combating crime,” said Campbell.
She added the metro’s regular joint efforts with the SAPS and EMPD are crucial in implementing the safer city model.
“We are doing everything in our power to fight crime, especially with the festive season ahead and are pleading with residents not to take matters into their own hands when they are dealing with suspects.
“They must inform the SAPS, CPF and neighbourhood watch about suspicious people and activity in their area.
“The chief of the EMPD has been instrumental in targeting areas that have been identified as crime hotspots with his teams.”
The MMC of Community Safety, Khathotshelo Rasilingwane, said law enforcement must do everything in its power to protect citizens.
