It has been just over a year since Klaas du Toit was fatally shot by his neighbour in Impala Park, and his family continues to grapple with the emotional wounds.
Du Toit was fatally shot and killed on August 18, last year, and 74-year-old Evan Swanson has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting.
He previously told the court that he shot his neighbour in self-defence.
Swanson appeared in court again on September 4 and the case was again postponed to October 2.
The victim’s family has raised concerns about the matter being drawn out to finalisation and Boksburg Advertiser has asked the NPA for comment in this regard.
Du Toit’s mother, Magda Potgieter, said she still finds the loss of her son unbelievable, adding it feels like it happened yesterday.
“We are all suffering emotionally. I’m on medication to help me keep calm. Klaas’s death left a void, and the heartache will never go away. It doesn’t get better with time, “ said Potgieter.
“I’m just trusting the Lord now. I understand that justice won’t bring back my son, but it will assure me that fairness has been served.”
Potgieter said Du Toit’s special needs son is doing well under the circumstances.
“He’s getting big and is a lovely boy.”
Roelf, Du Toit’s twin brother, is still in the process of becoming the guardian of Du Toit’s daughter, which he said should be finalised within a few months.
“It’s a struggle to come to terms with what happened. It also doesn’t get any easier seeing him (Swanson) at court appearances,” he said.
