Dumpsites get special attention

Both dumpsites have reopened.

The two dumpsites (Dayanglen and Impala Park) that re-opened over the weekend were assessed and evaluated by the metro’s special task team on February 27.

The dumpsites were closed earlier this year because of a crisis of overflowing waste.

According to the metro spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, who the Boksburg Advertiser met on-site in Impala Park on February 26, the task team visited both sites to assess them and devise systems that would permanently prevent such a crisis again.

“In November and December, we were overwhelmed with refuse removal complaints. Due to this, the city manager and executive mayor put together a special task team to try to stabilise the situation and ensure that all the waste is removed before the end of 2022.

“Unfortunately, during the festive season, the waste problem worsened because many residents were home, which resulted in more household waste needing to be disposed of. “We couldn’t really catch up as we expected to,” explained Dlamini.

He said the special task team identified two critical issues in the Waste Management Department.

“One issue is that the department was on the brink of collapsing and, because of management, couldn’t render the waste effectively. The second issue is that the department operates with old fleets that frequently break down.
“These issues made it inevitable that our customers experienced a collection backlog.”

Compounding the issue of the overflowing dumps, Dlamini said, is that residents bring their refuse to the dumpsites because of the non-collection.

“To resolve the problem, we closed the facilities and started clearing them,” he said.

“Our main aim now is to normalise the services of the dumpsites. The Impala Park dumpsite, where we are today, is open. As you can see, people are already using the site.

“The Dayanglen site was badly operated, filthy and overflowing, but as I speak to you now, it is squeaky clean and open to the public,” concluded Dlamini.
