Metro responds to Villa Liza sewage spillage issue

The issue will be resolved.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) will send a maintenance team to stop the sewage spillage at the land earmarked for development in Ext 4, Villa Liza.

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the sewer leakage resurfaced this year again. A contractor, appointed to do remedial work at the site after the first contractor left, fixed it.

Dlamini explained the cause of the leakage can only be revealed by the city’s maintenance team since the new installations have not been connected to the existing lines,” explained Dlamini.

Dlamini mentioned that the connection couldn’t materialise due to insufficient budget.

“There was a contractor on site until the end of December 2022 who left the site at the end of its contract. The city is busy appointing a new contractor to the project to complete the outstanding work.

“The city was not aware of this current situation at the site, but their water and sanitation maintenance team will attend to it.”

He added the completion of the development depends on the availability of funds. The city is currently sourcing funding to complete all the testing needed on the water bulk lines and installation of bulk meters.

“However, there is still the need to construct roads and storm water systems, including attenuation ponds for which there is no funding in this current financial year.

“The housing development can only start after they have signed off the remaining engineering works. This also requires funding from the Human Settlements Development Grant, which gets allocated by the provincial government,” he concluded.
