Suspended EMPD Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and JMPD officer Kgomotso Makhubu, the final two suspects charged in connection with the alleged theft of precious stones in Killarney, Johannesburg, were each granted R5 000 bail by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on July 21.

The pair was arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and the Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Kensington and Alberton on Friday. They first appeared in court on 18 July, where they applied for bail. The matter was postponed to Monday for the court’s ruling.

Mkhwanazi and Makhubu now join their co-accused, Kersha Stoltz and Adriaan McKenzie, who were each granted R5000 bail on 16 July.
All four accused are expected to return to court on August 25.

According to the allegations, the suspects unlawfully raided a property in Killarney in 2023 without a search warrant and seized precious stones valued at approximately R15m.
