Hyacinth’s days numbered
The residents of Witfield could not enjoy the dam because of the invasive hyacinth.
After a recent story about the hyacinth and other problems at Witfield Dam in the Boksburg Advertiser, the City of Ekurhuleni(CoE) has finally deployed a harvester machine to deal with the hyacinth.
According to CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the city aimed to reduce the rapid spread of hyacinth in local water bodies through various methods.
“The city sprays herbicide and releases biocontrol agents like insects to remove the hyacinth in various water bodies.
“We started with the Witfield, Lakefield and Presidents dams and will move to other affected water bodies,” explained Dlamini.
He said the amphibian hydraulic machine was at Presidents Dam in Springs.
“All these hyacinth removal machines will rotate across the city’s water bodies. There is progress, and we are confident of restoring most water bodies to their original condition,” expressed Dlamini.
“The harvester in Witfield Dam will be there until the dam is clean. Then it will redeploy to other water bodies. Same as the machines deployed in other water bodies.
“The city thanks the public who have continuously fought the invasion of this plant in the region,” Dlamini concluded.
