Hundreds of EMPD vehicles stuck in workshops
Concerns were raised about the shortage of EMPD response vehicles, hampering crime-fighting efforts in the city.
A council report has revealed that at least 421 EMPD vehicles are out of service and stuck in workshops where they are either awaiting maintenance or repair.
The report highlighted the longstanding shortage of police vehicles, which has been impacting crime-fighting efforts.
The ACDP in the City of Ekurhuleni raised concerns about the turnaround time at the workshop for police vehicles, saying the delays have exacerbated the shortage of EMPD response vehicles, hampering crime-fighting efforts in the city.
ACDP’s councillor Tambo Mokoena said: “We asked a question in council about how many EMPD vehicles are currently in the city’s repair shops awaiting repairs. We were shocked – but not entirely surprised – by the response from the MMC of Roads and Transport Planning.
“Sadly, we are told that a total of 421 EMPD vehicles have been ‘booked for repairs.
“The contract for repairs and maintenance was awarded on March 28, and the process to repair all these vehicles has commenced. They will be released starting from April 28 as and when they are completed based on the extent of repairs required,” according to the MMC’s response.
