City clears confusion over extension of BRT to Reiger Park

Some residents, including public transport operators, were alarmed over the announcement that the city has appointed a contractor to carry out a project to upgrade the route in preparation for the extension of the BRT to the township.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has finally cleared up the confusion and public concern regarding the extension of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to Reiger Park.

This comes after the area’s ward Clr Edith Klassen’s social media post suggested a contractor had been appointed – signalling the start of the project to bring the affordable, safe, and reliable BRT system, known as Harambee, to connect the township with the OR Tambo International Airport.
Her assertion brought her into conflict with the municipality, sparked public debates about public consultation processes, and reportedly alarmed existing public transport operators.

The CoE clarified that the appointed contractor did not indicate the start of the BRT project. They attributed the confusion to apparent miscommunication among municipal officials, the contractor, and the ward councillor.
“Some of the involved parties misinterpreted the information as suggesting a contractor had been appointed for the BRT. The appointed contractor was actually assigned to carry out general maintenance and upgrades to the township’s road infrastructure,” explained Dlamini.

He added that the project includes upgrading the existing bus stops and sidewalks, which Dlamini believes could have led to the confusion about the project.
The affected routes include the stretch of Middle and Elsburg roads, Goedehoop Avenue and Leon Ferreira Drive.

Klassen, who initially stood by her earlier statement, confirmed that she subsequently met with all the relevant parties in Germiston, where they cleared up the misunderstanding.
“I had no intention of misleading the public. I just communicated what the officials told me in my office. However, it’s been resolved. I’ve done my part.”
