Letter to the Editor: Ravenswood roads need urgent attention

The City appreciates the patience and understanding of residents while efforts continue to address infrastructure challenges across the region.

Cindy Haviga, Ravenswood, writes:

I am writing to raise serious concerns regarding the worsening condition of roads in our area, particularly the increasing number of potholes that have made daily travel both difficult and hazardous.

Multiple complaints have already been logged with the relevant municipal authorities.

However, we were informed that there is no budget available to address these issues.

Despite this, the state of the roads continues to deteriorate at an alarming rate.

The potholes are now extensive and pose a real risk to both motorists and pedestrians, leading to vehicle damage and safety concerns for all road users.

It is deeply frustrating for residents who consistently pay rates and taxes to receive no tangible service delivery in return, especially when it comes to essential infrastructure such as road maintenance.

We kindly request that this matter be brought to public attention through your publication, in the hope that increased awareness will prompt the necessary action from the responsible authorities.

Editor’s note: City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamin responded: The Roads Maintenance Depot is aware of the extent of the road defects and potholes within the affected area. The roads have been assessed and are included within the depot’s maintenance needs register. However, the implementation of comprehensive rehabilitation and maintenance interventions is currently constrained by limited operational and capital budget availability. In the interim, the depot continues to prioritise critical pothole repairs and road safety-related defects based on available resources and the severity of reported conditions. The concerns raised by residents are acknowledged and the affected roads remain under continuous monitoring for possible phased maintenance intervention as funding becomes available. The City appreciates the patience and understanding of residents while efforts continue to address infrastructure challenges across the region.
