Little girl with big heart fills her piggy bank for Chereez
The little girl raised R1 169.50 and donated it towards cancer survivor Chereez Nel's medical bills.
Determined to assist children with cancer by filling a tin piggy bank, Rebecca Manning (8), who attends Nova Pioneer, has proved you are never too young to make a difference.
Rebecca started filling the piggy bank after asking her mother, Denise, if children can get cancer.
Between January last year and October this year, the tenacious little girl sacrificed her tuckshop money and pocket money, and put change she found lying around the house into the tin. She also roped in the family to
open their wallets and in October attended the Catholic Women’s League Mad Hatter-themed
tea party in aid of Cansa where guests also contributed.
Rebecca raised R1 169.50 and decided to donate it to local cancer survivor Chereez Nel’s medical bills.
Chereez was diagnosed with undifferentiated aggressive soft sarcoma stage three cancer early in 2018. She is now cancer-free, but the Nel family is still in the process of paying a generous donor back for the trip they undertook to the USA for treatment.
Chereez and her mom, Angelique, recently visited Rebecca and her family at their home in Jan Smutsville, where the moms cut the tin open and counted the money collected while the girls had fun for hours, playing and getting to know each other.
“I don’t like it when people get sick. It hurts. I’m healthy and I feel like I can make a difference.
“That is why I decided to rather fill the piggy bank my dad, Craig, bought for me for children in need,” said Rebecca.
The success of her first effort has spurred Rebecca on to do the same again next year – and, she is challenging other children and their parents to start a tin project.
“They can fill the piggy bank for a year and afterwards donate the money to a charity organisation of their choice. It will help the person or organisation,” she said.
Angelique said they appreciate every cent donated towards their ‘little fighter’.
