#Easter: Nothing cute about giving a bunny as a gift
The SPCA is against pets being given as gifts because the new owner may not be prepared for the type of care and expenses the animal needs.
The Boksburg SPCA reminds the public not to give “cute” bunnies as Easter presents as pets should never be given as gifts.
Manager Vicky Finnemore explained that owning a rabbit can be more difficult than people think.
“Rabbits can, in fact, become quite high maintenance if not cared for properly. They are difficult to housetrain and can burrow out of grassy enclosures,” she said.
She added that the SPCA does not condone the giving of pets as gifts, for any reason, because often the person receiving the pet is not prepared for this species of animal or the expenses which come with owning it.
“All sorts of factors must be taken into consideration when you get a pet, such as enough garden space, body corporate rules, vet costs and feeding routines.”
