Residents invited to fundraiser for Lilianton suburb enclose
Residents of Lilianton are forging ahead with their mission to close off their suburb, an initiative that seeks to improve security in the crime-prone neighbourhood.
The Lilianton Residents’ Enclosure Committee is inviting residents of the area and surroundings to support its community market, organised to raise funds for the proposed enclosure of the suburb.
The market will be held at the New Apostolic Church on May 27 and will run from 09:00 to 17:00.
According to one of the event organisers, Charlene Day, there are already 26 confirmed vendors who will be selling various items, and most of them are from the local community.
“We have three sources of income for the fundraiser: stand fees, raffle tickets, and an auction to sell luxury holiday packages, sports and African memorabilia and wines. We are only a few months away from the fence going up and it is our wish that our fundraiser will be a huge success,” explained Day.

Update
Regardless of the financial challenges, residents of Lilianton are forging ahead with their mission to close off their suburb, an initiative that seeks to improve security in the crime-prone neighbourhood.
The process to turn the area into a gated community was initiated a few years ago and has only received the final approval from City Planning on March 8.
This is according to the Lilianton Residents’ Enclosure Committee.
Day explained that they still need the following things for the enclosure to become a success:
• To sign the contract at Ekurhuleni and present them with a 20% guarantee cheque for the total cost of the project.
• The tender must be out for contractors to quote, and this process expires by May 23 and all quotes must be in by then. Once they reach this stage, they can advertise again in the Government gazette. Thereafter they can start the application for wayleaves and the fences can go up once wayleaves are approved.
The committee pointed out that the proposed enclosure of Lilianton is a security mechanism intended to do more than just deter robbers and hijackers, but to also protect the public infrastructure and prevent illegal land use.
Residents are encouraged to support the market organised to aid the crime-fighting method that is put in place by the community.
