New donor practitioner for Boksburg SANBS
Peter Mafela urges community members to donate blood and save lives.
“My passion for blood donation is motivated daily by the positive role I play in saving lives. I’m indirectly playing a role in giving people a second chance in life so that they can spend many more years with their families.”
These are the words of Peter Mafela, the recently appointed new donor relations practitioner for the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) in Boksburg.
The Vaal resident studied public relations management through Unisa and started working at SANBS in March 2016 as a tele-recruiter for the Boksburg branch.
In June 2017, Mafela became a donor recruiter for the Vereeniging branch and in July 1208, was seconded to be a donor relations practitioner for Vaal Zone, a one-year project. His key responsibility was to find new blood drives for the Vereeniging and Klerksdorp branches.
In August 2019, he returned to being a donor recruiter for the Vereeniging branch before returning to the Boksburg branch this year as a donor relations practitioner.
Mafela said it felt great to be part of the branch where he started his career.
“I look forward to having good working relations with the Boksburg community and other stakeholders in the East Rand area.
“The Boksburg branch is a great team to be part of. My vision is to have it grow and exceed what it collected last year. I have identified gaps in how the branch can grow.
“The goal is to have four permanent mobile teams go out daily as currently, we have three permanent teams and one contract team. We are working hard and smart to grow the branch.”
All that wouldn’t be possible without the selfless donors who take time from their busy schedules to donate blood.
As June is National Blood Donor Month, Mafela reminds community members to roll up their sleeves and donate blood.
