Boksburg Lake Rotary club closes due to lack of membership
The rotary club needed more members to survive.
The Boksburg Lake Rotary Club, instrumental in aiding the residents and organisations in Boksburg since 1977, closed down on June 30.
Boksburg Lake Rotary Club came to life because a pharmacist who lived in Parkdene could not attend the lunchtime meetings of the Boksburg Rotary Club and founded evening meetings for all the people who could not attend the meetings of the Boksburg Rotary Club during the day.
One of the surviving founders of the club, Nicky Savvides, said they were forced to close the club due to a lack of members.
“The club only has four members, which puts us in a difficult position, because we will not be able to run the club adequately.
“We were expecting young people to join the club, but that didn’t happen. We understand because most young people are busy bettering their lives. And lately, to survive in life demands more than back then,” he explained.
He mentioned he feels sad to see the club they have worked so hard for to exist, close down.
“It wasn’t easy for us to get the club running because we were only given the Rotary charter in 1997. We had to have 20 members or more in four conservative meetings to be given the charter by Rotary International. Over the years, we assisted several organisations and people in Boksburg.
“We hosted Christmas parties and mid-year braais for the Cosmos Old Age Centre and Vita Nova,” said Savvides.
He added they also helped Kuselo Child and Youth Care Services.
“The club supported Urbans Ruins and Lona Kruger Feeding Scheme, who were saddened when they heard that we are closing the club.
“We worked with several organisations in Boksburg and other areas which will also be affected by our closure.
“However, we would also like to thank all our sponsors. Nothing would have been possible without their help,” he added.
He indicated as members the club gave them meaning in life and an opportunity to exercise their philanthropic qualities.
