Community stalwart dies at 95
Daphne Braaf will be remembered for knitting beanies and scarves to keep those in need warm, even when she was over the age of 90.
Daphne Braaf (95) of Morgan Ridge, renowned for keeping the needy warm by donating knitted items, died of natural causes on July 13.
She was a dedicated supporter of the Boksburg Advertiser’s Winter Wool Drive, despite being over 90 when she first started to knit for us.
Over the past six years, Daphne knitted and donated more than 800 beanies and scarves to our drive.
Another example of her kindness was when she celebrated her 90th birthday. Instead of guests giving her gifts, Daphne’s daughter, Noleen Braaf, gave each guest a ball of wool and knitting needles so they could also get into knitting.
Noleen said her mom’s death had left a void in her life.
“She was my inspiration. Mom was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed embroidery, candle wicking, cross-stitch and other crafts. She will be missed.”
Elize Kluyts, the project coordinator of the Boksburg Advertiser’s Winter Wool Drive, extended heartfelt condolences to Daphne’s family on behalf of the publication.
“We are thankful for her supporting the drive over the years. She truly cared about the project and helped disadvantaged people keep warm in the winter. Her dedication was inspirational,” said Elize.
Daphne is survived by her five children, three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held for her at St Dominic’s Catholic Church on July 29.
