Another sinkhole opens up in Comet

The road closure proved to be a nightmare for the heavy traffic it carried each day.

The growing number of Rondebult Road sinkholes that have opened up in Comet threaten to make the stretch of the road completely impassable.

This is after another massive sinkhole opened up on the southbound hard shoulder.
The metro said it was aware of the new holes and sent its team to inspect and barricade the area.
According to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, while the metro still believed the cause could be related to mining activities in the area, the city was working with the relevant stakeholders to ensure the road got fixed.

However, the city deemed it appropriate to finalise the necessary investigations into the causes and extent of damage.
Dlamini confirmed the metro is prepared to take responsibility to rehabilitate the stretch of road, particularly once the investigations have been finalised.

The metro also apologised for the delays and lack of regular updates about the ongoing processes to resole the problem.

The first sinkhole opened up in February in the northbound hard shoulder of Rondebult Road in
Comet, prompting authorities to close this section as a precautionary measure.

The road closure proved to be a nightmare for the heavy traffic it carried each day.
Remedial works to reopen the road suffered delays.
