Action-packed Shavathon benefits cancer survivors

The volunteers raised just over R6 000 at the event.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In support of this, the Calvary Bikers Ministry and the Reiger Park Cancer Support Group hosted an action-packed CANSA Shavathon at Reiger Park Primary on October 14 to benefit cancer survivors.

The event, which is the first of its kind in the area according to the organisers, saw scores of young and old come out in support.
Participants could show their support by donating a fee and having their hair shaved or sprayed. The donations of hair will help to make wigs for cancer patients.

Carol Jones took the plunge and had her hair shaved by biker Lee Grant in solidarity with the cause.

The event also raised money through the sale of stalls, a voluntary entrance fee and monetary donations into a dedicated bank account.
Attendees, particularly children, enjoyed the jumping castle, face painting and dancing to the pumping beats of the DJ.
The volunteers raised just over R6 000 at the event.

Community members, bikers and support group members who came to show their solidarity with cancer survivors at the event in Reiger Park.

The support group’s founder and chairperson, Ulita Billings, described the event as a success, saying this had encouraged them to consider making this initiative an annual event.
“We thank everyone for their Action-packed Shavathon benefits cancer survivors support and help to host this memorable event in our area,” said Billings.

Mark Hank, a Calvary Bikers Ministry member, a resident of Reiger Park, and a taxi owner, said they decided to partner with the support group and be part of the event to show solidarity with those affected by cancer.
“Our vision is to help underprivileged people, the sick and NGOs caring for the vulnerable. We thank our local businesses and individuals who supported the event.
“The event had a good turnout from the community and the bikers’ community because we even had bikers from as far as Roodepoort and Krugersdorp, who descended on our area and made their donations,” said Hank.

Hank emphasised the need for supporting local support groups.
“In 2008, my father died of cancer, so I went completely bald today. I encourage everyone to come and support the cancer support group because some patients do not have the means or families, so they need the support from the group.”

Some of the bikers who supported the good cause are Bazil Abrahams, David Cooper, Nathan Overmeyer, Mark Hank, and Julius and Keagan Rutters.
