Benoni South gets a clean sweep

The industrial area is steadily being beautified.

By doing a little, a lot can be achieved.

This is the motto of Dunlop Belting Products management’s community upliftment controller, Danie du Plessis.

For the past year, the mega manufacturer has been working hand-in-hand with Sunflowers Garden and Landscaping Services to clean and maintain various public spaces surrounding its factory.

Teams from the garden service were once again out in full force, clearing gullies and walkways across along the Commissioner Street bridge, from Main Reef to Van Dyk roads and through to Industry Road, on February 21.

Clearing the gullies and walk ways is Timatio Mavola.

Just after 07:00, motorists hooted and pedestrians waved as the team, clad in overalls, flanked both sides of Lincoln Road west, cutting overgrowth.

Soon they will add a lick of fresh paint to the barriers on the Commissioner Street bridge.

“This is a partnership that works,” said Danie.

“When Louwrens Botes, of Sunflowers, approached me with his idea to kick-start cleaning projects in the area, it was difficult not to match his enthusiasm and drive.

“In the past 12 months we have successfully cleared and maintained the park along Prince’s Avenue as well as two parks in Actonville.”

The dynamic duo were also responsible for orchestrating a mass clean-up of the Wattville Stadium, a project that is further maintained by the ground staff, following a donation of an industrial lawnmower.
“I identified Lincoln Road because I firmly believe that if it is neat, members of the community as well as employees from local businesses will feel motivated and safer,” said Botes

“I have a vision of businesses and members of the community banding together to not only clean areas surrounding their homes and business but also taking ownership of these spaces in ensuring that it a safe and conducive environment.”

Extending on their vision, Botes and Du Plessis hope that the fruit of their labour will encourage other local businesses to contribute to the initiative thus, increasing its reach.
