Reiger Park Library commemorates World Book and Copyright Day

World Book and Copyright Day was celebration at Reiger Park Library to promote love of books and reading.

World Book and Copyright Day was celebrated on April 23. It is a significant date in world literature and the Reiger Park Library heeded the call to promote a love of books and reading.

Filmmaker, scriptwriter, actor and comedian Kevin Ehrenreich was among the keynote speakers who weighed in on the importance of reading at a special event that saw scores of young learners invited to take part.
Cecil Morden, co-author, editor and the driving force behind the book Reiger Park: Home to Many/’n Tuiste, also addressed guests.

“Low levels of literacy are associated with high levels of poverty,” he said.
Morden said he makes use of the library to read old copies of the Boksburg Advertiser and its predecessors to relive history and urged learners to stay focused and positive and do their best to tackle challenges faced in society.

It was a happy moment for everyone to join Siyabonga Shabangu (Cia da Poet) in an educational sing-along. Shabangu recited poems for the young to enjoy and source motivation.

Learners from the Happy Kids Centre rendered a nursery rhyme item. Teacher Nothando Thwala said: “I found this event interesting and inspiring. It stressed that reading is a necessity waiting to be explored, daily.”

Doddy Buthelezi, an author from Sunward Park, shared with the audience her five pillars of writing – identifying an opportunity, visioning, eliciting and structuring correctly. Lakeside Primary did a book character play.

Liviaan Boards, one of the learners, expressed his excitement about the programme. “I love books, so I enjoyed every minute here.”

Piet Mabapa, a librarian, commended the success of the event and expressed gratitude to all who participated.
“Our doors are open to anyone who would like to become a member. Just visit the library and ask how you join!” he said.

FUN FACT: William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega were among the well-known writers who died on April 23.
