#Matric: Find success with less stress

Focus on excelling in your strong subjects and avoid fixating on potential failures.

As the matric final exams approach, learners experience increased pressure, regardless of their preparation level.

Some learners face heightened anxiety and uncertainty, particularly those concerned about possibly failing one or more subjects.

Dingaan Moropane, the acting deputy dean of teaching and learning at IIE Rosebank College, advised learners to assess their situation realistically.

He emphasised that there is still time to enhance performance, reassured that alternative paths to success remain available, stressed the importance of avoiding a catastrophic mindset and suggested a strategic approach.

“Learners should focus on maximising their performance in subjects where they feel confident while also developing targeted plans for struggling subjects.

“Identifying weak areas, seeking additional help through hiring a tutor or forming a study group and accepting that a rewrite might be necessary.

“Seeking assistance could help with difficult subjects and reinforce the tutor’s own knowledge.”

He reiterated the method of Loci (a mnemonic device) as an effective technique for improving information retention and recall.

“This method involves associating information with specific locations in a familiar setting, creating vivid mental images and mentally walking through the location to retrieve the information.”

Moropane acknowledged that accepting the possibility of failing certain subjects is crucial for maintaining resilience.

“Focus on excelling in your strong subjects and avoid fixating on potential failures. While matric exams are an important milestone, they are not the sole determinant of future potential. View setbacks as temporary and use them as opportunities to regroup, reflect and strategise for future success.”
