SPCA seeks support for confiscated greyhounds
The society is now in desperate need of puppy food, adult dog food, blankets and extra-large plastic dog beds for these animals.
Boksburg SPCA is appealing for assistance from the public to support 10 greyhounds that were confiscated from Angelo informal settlement on September 19.
According to manager Vicky Finnemore, four puppies aged between four and six months and six adults were seized.
“The puppies were living in their faeces in a dark, closed-off shack at the back of the main enclosure.
“There was no ventilation and our inspectors described it as being an ‘oven’ in the midday heat.
“The adult male greyhounds were chained up inside the enclosure, and their skin was raw from the tight constraints,” said Finnemore.

She explained that greyhounds are known for their lightning-fast speed and are independent, gentle and noble dogs.
“They often fall victim to abuse because of their vulnerable nature and incredible athletic abilities. The puppies have already started interacting with the staff. However, the adults are completely broken, with not much will to live.

“We believe the animals were used for breeding. Some have scarring from fights with other dogs, but there’s not much indication they were used for illegal hunting.
“The dogs will not be returned to the owner, who will be dealt with accordingly,” said Finnemore.
The society is now in desperate need of puppy food, adult dog food, blankets and extra-large plastic dog beds for these animals.
Financial support would also be appreciated.
“Monetary donations will be used to cover veterinary costs, including vaccinations, deworming, parasite remedies, and wound treatment,” Finnemore added.
The society may be contacted at Boksburg SPCA on 011 916 5906/7.
