‘Violence leaves lasting scars’

The organisation also shared tips on how women and children can protect themselves from abuse and where they can go to get help.

Boksburg Kidz Clinic, in partnership with the Boksburg Clinic and local stakeholders, is addressing the pressing issue of gender-based and child abuse violence.

The clinic offers free medical and therapeutic intervention and treatment services for abused children.
They also provide psycho-social support, trauma and competency assessments, trauma debriefing, medical examinations and the completion of J88 forms to accompany police dockets, among other services.

According to social work supervisor Nonhlanhla Dlamnini, an upcoming session at the Mother and Baby Clinic will highlight the dangers of gender-based violence and its impact on women, children, and boys while guiding how to report abuse and access victim support services.

“Gender-based violence leaves lasting scars. For women, it can cause physical harm, psychological trauma, and economic hardship.

“For children, direct or indirect exposure often leads to emotional distress, developmental challenges and a higher risk of continuing the cycle of violence as victims or perpetrators,” she said.

Biyase added by raising awareness and providing resources, the initiative aims to create a safer, more resilient community.

The organisation also shared tips on how women and children can protect themselves from abuse and where they can go to get help:

• Identify a neighbour, friend, relative, colleague or shelter to go to in case you need to leave the house immediately for safety.
• Have a plan for how you will exit the house safely and reach your destination.
• Keep a few essential items, such as identification documents, phone, money, medicine and clothes readily available. Have a list of emergency contact numbers.
• If possible, develop a code with a trusted neighbour so they can come to your aid in an emergency.
