Zama zamas arrested after shootout with police

The suspects were found busy with their illegal mining activities.

The police recovered illegal firearms and live ammunition and arrested five illegal miners, who allegedly terrorised the public and opened fire at responding law enforcement agencies.

According to police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, on January 7, Dawn Park residents flagged down a police patrol vehicle and complained about foreign nationals terrorising the community of Lindelani informal settlement.

The officers called for backup from the SAPS’ Public Order Policing, the EMPD and security companies before proceeding to the area the gunmen had allegedly gone to.

“After noticing the approaching law enforcement agencies, the gangs opened fire on the officers and started to run away. Officers retaliated and gave chase on foot. They arrested five suspects, and no one was injured in the shootout. Officers recovered two firearms, one with its serial number filed off, and recovered 12 live rounds of ammunition.”

The suspects, all foreign nationals, are charged with attempted murder and possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition.
They will soon appear in court.
Major General Anna Sithole, the SAPS Ekurhuleni district commissioner, commended the members’ swift response in tackling illegal mining and the proliferation of unlicensed firearms in the district.
