Cason residents fed up with illegal dumping, fires
The residents said the situation is unbearable.
Residents of Cason are at their wits’ end with the burning of illegally dumped materials, including stolen cables and tyres, in the area.
According to one of the residents, who wished to remain anonymous, these toxic fires are not a new thing. It has been happening in open veld areas for years.
The Boksburg Advertiser visited one of these velds, in the vicinity of Cason Road and 14th Avenue, and saw illegal dumping and evidence of materials being burned there.
“I can’t handle it anymore. People dump stuff and then they burn it. The smell of the smoke is terrible and it’s not good for our lungs. It’s unbearable,” said the resident.
Another resident, who also chose to remain anonymous, added the illegal dumping is causing a rodent infestation.
The residents said they have tried reporting the matter to the police, EMPD and the metro, but to no avail.
Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos said he is deeply concerned and alarmed by the rampant illegal dumping and burning of stolen electrical cables near residential areas in his ward.
“This not only poses a significant environmental hazard but also puts the lives of our residents at risk.
“As the ward councillor, I condemn this illegal activity in the strongest possible terms. I urge residents to report any instances of illegal dumping and burning to the authorities immediately.”
De Vos will be engaging with the EMPD, SAPS and municipal officials to ensure that they take decisive action against those responsible for this illegal activity.
“I will be advocating for increased resources and support to address the root causes of this problem, including poverty, unemployment and lack of access to basic services. Let us work together to protect our community and our environment.”
The Boksburg Advertiser is awaiting comment from the metro.
