Public meeting called on valuation roll

Residents who remain sceptical about the processes followed said they need the city to explain how it arrived at these excessively high valuations.

The Boksburg CBD’s City Improvement Project (CIP) is inviting local property owners to attend a meeting to discuss issues arising from the City of Ekurhuleni’s new valuation roll.
This meeting will be held at the Boksburg Civic Centre at 10:00 on March 26.

The city’s fifth General Valuation Roll for the period July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2029, is now open for public comment.
Property owners can inspect the roll, which will come into effect at the start of the new financial year on July 1, at the City of Ekurhuleni walk-in centres between 08:30 and 15:30, Monday to Friday, as well as on the city’s website (www.ekurhuleni.gov.za) until June 25.

According to CIP’s Derek Fox, some property owners in Boksburg have slammed the new roll and already indicated that they are going to lodge objections over the new valuations of their properties because of excessively high valuations.
From what Fox has gathered, one of the ageing building on Commissioner Street (Boksburg CBD) had its value according to the new valuation escalated from R5.7m to R14m. Another property in the same area, which was valued at R3.2m in the previous roll, is now valued at R9m.

“To go from that amount to R14m indicates that something is not right here. We need the city to explain how it arrive at these excessively high valuations.
“We believe that there are many other residents who face the same situation. Which is why we decided to organise this meeting to talk about the new valuation roll and take the necessary steps,” said Fox.
