Reiger Park man sentenced to 15 years for murder
The Reiger Park station commander commended everyone involved for a job well done.
A 34-year-old man from Reiger Park was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment, of which five years were suspended, at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court, for murder, on March 18.
Mxolisi Wiseman Jiyane pleaded not guilty on September 27, 2024, and was found guilty as charged on February 21.
Prosecutor Advocate Nxumalo represented the State, and Magistrate Shilubana presided over the matter.
Jiyane was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
According to Reiger Park spokesperson Johannes Msimanga, the conviction stems from an incident in which a 27-year-old man was stabbed in his right ear at the Joe Slovo Informal Settlement on April 24, 2021.
“The victim was rushed to the hospital when police arrived on the scene. The police went to the hospital to verify the situation and found that the victim couldn’t speak at the time due to the injuries he had sustained,” Msimanga said.
The victim was later identified as Nkoroane Thapelo.
“Unfortunately, Thapelo died in the hospital due to the stab wound, and a case of murder was registered and assigned to Sergeant Veya Khosa for further investigation.”
“Khosa worked tirelessly to bring the perpetrator to justice, obtaining statements from witnesses,” Msimanga added.
The spokesperson thanked the witnesses and all those who worked with the police to ensure justice was served.
Station commander Lieutenant Colonel Lionel Chetty welcomed the sentence.
