Two hospitalised after fire at Boksburg flats

As flames tore through the Boksburg CBD flats, dozens were evacuated.

The residential flats on Commissioner Street in the Boksburg CBD caught fire just before 09:00 on June 2.

Of the 60 occupants, only two were hospitalised.

According to DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi, a three-storey block of flats was already alight when DEMS arrived on the scene.

“The fire originated on the ground floor and quickly spread to the two upper floors,” said Ntladi.

Ntladi said the building has 20 rooms housing all 60 occupants, along with two shops on the ground floor.

“Ten apartments were extensively damaged, while the others sustained smoke and water damage.”

Some of the damage caused by the blaze.

Ntladi confirmed everyone was evacuated and prevented from re-entering the building until after a safety inspection was done.

He said the two occupants, an adult man and a woman, were in stable condition.

“One had smoke inhalation, and the other a laceration on the left cheek.”

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

During firefighting efforts, part of Commissioner Street had to be temporarily closed to traffic.
