VIDEO: Process to fix Rondebult Road sinkhole dragging on
Despite longstanding public outcry that the issue has persisted far longer than is reasonable, local authorities are still battling to get support from other government spheres, with no meaningful progress in sight.
The ongoing delay in repairing the sinkholes on Rondebult Road in Comet continues to undermine the city’s economy, frustrate road users, and negatively impact local businesses.
Many had hoped that the MMC for Finance’s R65.5b budget would allocate funds to fix the road. However, the 2025/26 financial budget tabled on May 29 did not include any provision for these repairs.
In response to questions from Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos, Transport MMC Andile Mngwevu stated in writing that “the department currently does not have sufficient funding, resources, or equipment to carry out the required remedial repair work”.

He added that the department is still in discussions with the provincial government and other relevant stakeholders in an effort to secure the necessary resources and assistance.
Meanwhile, the Finance MMC allocated R54m to address sinkholes citywide — an amount insufficient to repair the two large sinkholes on Rondebult Road.
The MMC acknowledged in his budget speech that more funds will be needed to tackle this backlog. He further said, “Where possible, we must explore cost-effective ways of accommodating residents whose properties are affected by sinkhole repairs.”
The estimated cost to reinstate the road is R50m for a short-term solution and R140m for a long-term solution, depending on the final design proposal.
The MMC noted that the city is seeking assistance from the province and anticipates that the road will be repaired through inter-governmental collaboration.

Roads and transport management budget
Facing a deteriorating road network, the city has allocated a budget of R946m for Roads and Transport Management. Of this, R527m will be used for road rehabilitation and pothole patching.
Another R41.3m is earmarked for repairing and maintaining traffic signals, while R207m will cover procurement of materials and supplies to boost internal capacity for pothole repairs, road marking, signage, and stormwater maintenance.
Strategic importance of Rondebult Road
The stretch of Rondebult Road in Boksburg is recognised as a critical artery in the city’s economy. It facilitates the transport of goods and services, as well as the daily commute of approximately 40 000 vehicles, including the workforce traveling between major industries, economic hubs, and OR Tambo International Airport.
This key municipal Class Two road connects several major highways including the N17 and N12, highlighting its vital role in regional connectivity.
