WATCH: Westraad’s bail denied in Brandon Pretorius murder case
The matter will continue on September 18.
Emotions ran high when Gordon Westraad (45), a co-accused in the Brandon Pretorius murder case, was denied bail when he appeared alongside Ruan Beetge (30) in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on August 12.
Westraad and Beetge are accused of killing Pretorius. They face charges of murder stemming from an incident that reportedly began at Malbroer Pub and Grill on the evening of April 25.
According to Magistrate SD Prawlall, Westraad failed to prove exceptional circumstances that would justify his release on bail.
Westraad argued, among other things, that he is the breadwinner for his family and needs to support his wife, who is battling cancer.
Brandon’s mother, Lisa, broke down in tears when the magistrate delivered his ruling and, speaking outside the court, said she was grateful Westraad’s bail application had finally been concluded.
“I’m glad we reached this point. It’s extremely emotional having to hear it repeatedly. Now we have to wait and see what happens. I’m satisfied with the ruling.”
Lisa said they still miss Brandon terribly.
“We have a cupboard for his ashes and the things he used to collect. There’s even a wall with his photos and a wardrobe for his belongings in my room.

“Every night is difficult because I see him and miss him. He was so loving and gentle. He always laughed and didn’t get angry easily. Brandon wasn’t a fighter or a drinker; he enjoyed being at home, and we used to have braais together.
“His father, sister, brother, girlfriend, and daughter are all still struggling. He’ll never truly be gone, because the photos and memories will always remain.
Meanwhile, Beetge has abandoned his bail application for now. His legal team withdrew from the case last month for undisclosed reasons, and he has since applied for legal aid.
The matter will resume on September 18.
