SPCA’s filly needs a home

The SPCA is calling on the community and wider equine circles to share Freya’s story so that she can get adopted.

In the wake of a roadside tragedy, a young filly named Freya has become a symbol of resilience – and now she’s looking for a second chance at life, in the form of a loving forever home.

The filly was rescued by the Boksburg SPCA after her mother was struck and fatally injured on Barry Marais Road on June 23, not far from residential and rural areas where animals are often kept in informal paddocks.

SPCA Inspector Ralph Chivaviro said he had just arrived home, at around 18:30, when he received a call.

“I asked my colleague, Docter Mphela, to check the scene.

“He confirmed the mare was in bad condition. I then responded and had to humanely euthanase her. She had sustained broken legs, among other injuries. It was terrible. Every time I see Freya, I think about what I had to do to her mother.”

The filly, then around seven months old, was found stressed, nearby in a veld. The team launched a rescue, safely transporting her to Boksburg SPCA.

“We appealed to residents in the area to come forward with any information about where the horses were from but nobody came forward. All we could do from that point on was give the foal love.”

Freya was found in a field near Barry Marais Road.

Since her arrival at the SPCA, Freya has slowly come out of her shell.

Described as an animal with a good temperament and a sweet nature, she’s become a staff favourite.

“She’s really a sweet little thing. Everyone here loves her but what she needs now is more than just temporary care. We would love to find her home.”

The SPCA is seeking a horse-experienced adopter, preferably someone who has other horses or ponies to be Freya’s companions and enough space for her to grow into a healthy, well-adjusted adult.

“She’ll need room to roam and someone who knows a thing or two about young horses,” he added.

Freya’s adoption fee is R2 500 and all standard SPCA adoption protocols apply, including pre-home inspections and microchipping.

Furthermore, the society is calling on the local community and wider equine circles to share Freya’s story.

If you or someone you know may be able to give Freya the home she needs, visit the Boksburg SPCA premises in Railyway Street or send an email to adoptions@boksburgspca
