Coffee connects community and police
Local cops connect with residents in a relaxed setting at K90 Centre.
There are a few things a good cup of coffee cannot fix. This was evident when Chris Batts of Radio Hi 5 Stereo, in partnership with Sport Against Crime, hosted a Coffee with a Cop event at the K90 Centre recently.
The aim was to rebuild trust and strengthen the relationship between the public and the police.
Representatives from the Boksburg North SAPS, Legendary Guardians Exclusive Protection, and other stakeholders attended the event and were on hand to answer questions from community members.

Residents enjoyed the opportunity to engage directly with local officers, asking questions and seeking information – all while Batts broadcast live from what he dubbed his ‘office for the day’.
One attendee, Pabatso Rakale from Vosloorus, asked a female officer for her views on kidnappings. The officer responded: “Within our policing precinct, kidnappings are not as significant an issue as missing persons. When someone is reported missing, we immediately circulate the information to help find them.”

Batts explained that Coffee with a Cop is originally an American concept that was brought to South Africa.
“Many people feel hesitant about going to a police station, but here they have the chance to chat with officers in a relaxed environment and enjoy a free cup of coffee.
“It strengthens communication and builds relationships. It shows that the police and other stakeholders are here to make a difference in the community. Many people think the police are only here to arrest, but it’s about much more than that.”
He extended his gratitude to the authorities and Meat World Boksburg, the K90 Centre, Nissan, and Tata for making the event possible.
Adding a touch of local flair, the musical duo Hartklop entertained attendees with a lively performance that got everyone tapping their feet.
