Local Scout group earns spot at prestigious challenge
With the Vaal River set as the next stage, Boksburg Scouts are preparing to take their skills to the next level.
Two East Rand Scout groups have earned a coveted invitation to the upcoming Chairman’s Challenge on the Vaal River, following their top-ten finish at this year’s Gauteng Kontiki competition held in May at Arrowe Park, Benoni.
Among the standout performers from the East Rand were 2nd Boksburg Scout Group (St Michaels) and 9th Benoni Scout Group, both of which were selected from a pool of 50 competing teams. These teams showcased their skills in raft-building and other Scouting disciplines over a full weekend of activities.
Kontiki is a much-anticipated annual event on the Scouting calendar, where groups from across Gauteng come together to compete. The main event challenges Scouts to construct and live on a raft for 24 hours. Participants are judged across various criteria.
The Chairman’s Challenge, set to take place at the end of September, invites only the top ten rafting teams from Kontiki, making it one of the most prestigious Scouting events.
Francois Coetzee, Scout group leader at 2nd Boksburg, praised the hard work and spirit of his team.

“As the Scout group leader, I am very proud of our group’s accomplishments. The team of Scouters give so much in terms of time and knowledge to the Scouts. But the thing that makes me most proud is the kids and their dedication and love for Scouting. Scouting is not an after-school activity to them, it’s a way of life, and they really enjoy each other’s company. Scouting is truly a brotherhood. I need to add that without the parents’ involvement, none of this would be possible.”
The 2nd Boksburg Scout Groups has been operating since 1916.
“We have a very proud Scouting history and have shaped hundreds of young boys and, more recently, girls into leaders and responsible members of society,” Francois said.
The group consists of three age groups – Meerkats (five to six), Cubs (seven to 11) and Scouts (12 to 18).
The objective of the Scouts is to teach young people life skills and foster a love for the great outdoors while enjoying themselves.
