DA demands suspension of EMPD top cop

The DA has called for the immediate suspension of an acting police chief after he was implicated in a corruption inquiry.

The DA in Ekurhuleni wants the EMPD acting chief of police, Julius Mkhwanazi, suspended immediately after his implication in corruption.

According to allegations made at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, Mkhwanazi allegedly helped businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala register his vehicles under the CoE using city funds, making them appear part of the municipal fleet.

In a statement, the DA said it had repeatedly demanded that the coalition government act against Mkhwanazi due to his alleged links to Matlala and because he is the subject of a damning investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

“It cannot be the case that a person alleged to be deeply rooted in corruption and other criminal acts is rewarded with more power to entrench criminality within the EMPD even further. The DA will not sit by while this failing coalition refuses to act.

“Honest, hardworking EMPD officers deserve no less than ethical and honest leadership. Residents deserve a law-abiding, crime free EMPD.”
The commission, chaired by retired Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, is investigating allegations of political interference, corruption and collusion in the criminal justice system with crime syndicates.
